Today I was reading Wikipedia and I found that they have mentioned that translation of Harry Potter
into Sinhalese is unofficial, but I found that book was available to buy over sarasavi.com.I’m just curious to know whether anyone know about this book(ISBN 9555732866). Also some trivia says Tamil translations are expected to hit the market around 15 January 2008.
There is no doubt; it’ll bring pleasure and happiness to our local children, if we can get these books in Tamil and Sinhalese. One of the reasons I learned or in other words improved my English is by reading Rowling’s work.
Even if there are some companies to translate this book, they have to have many problems, specially the black market problem. Nobody seems to care about intellectual property in Sri Lanka. Hope soon we can get these books in our languages. 🙄

Why transle? You said you improved your English reading Harry Potter? As a child I was forced to leanr English becasue I ran out of books ot read in Sinhala.

I don’t think any of the sinhala translations of JK Rowling, Enid Blyton and Carolyn Keene ( Nancy Drew) have been offocially sanctioned by the agents of the authors. To get the rights to translate to Sinhala would be very very expensive. I stand to be corrected though.
While I agree to a certain extent about Sujata being forced to learn english because she ran out of books to read in Sinhala in rural areas this is not possible so it is better for those kids to read the harry potter in sinhala rather than miss out all together Our charity purchased several translations of Harry potter enid blyon and nancy drew etc and gave them to schools in kantale so that those kids too would have an opportunity to read what we read albeit in english as kids.

I think the Sinhala version was published a few years ago actually (2002-2003?). While it’s great that kids will get an opportunity to read such a wonderful work, the translation if not done well, will certainly fail to convey the humour and wit which sets the book apart from other popular fantasy literature. Some of the Sinhala translations of Enid Blyton have been absolutely deplorable. I’ve never actually stumbled across the book in a book store but I would definitely be interested in reading it.
