I wanted to renew my domain so I went to Godaddy and tried to pay the money via PayPal. I was totally disappointed that Godaddy will accept only the PayPal accounts which has a credit card attached to it. Though I had some balance in my PayPal account I couldn’t pay the money.
Godaddy is growing, but they are losing their customers because of their poor customer care. Already many people are complaining about the poor hosting service provided by Godaddy. It will take ages to get a support from Godaddy’s customer care.
So I decided to transfer my domain from Godaddy to NameCheap. To initiate the transfer process you need to provide the EPP code to NameCheap. EPP code is a security code which used to identify the owner of the domain.
If you write to Godaddy and asked them for the EPP code, I’m sure they’ll fuss around. You can manually get the EPP code from your Godaddy control panel.
Login to GoDaddy. Go into the domain management section and select your domain. Then you will see down in the bottom left corner of the screen a line that says Authorization Code: Send By Email. Click the Send by Email link and follow the onscreen prompts. Then GoDaddy will send you your EPP code to the email address you have registered as your Technical Contact for your domain. Next I cut and pasted that EPP code into the namecheap.com domain transfer status screen.
After that you need to release the lock in Godaddy, so that it’ll get transfer to the new domain registrar. In my case NameCheap.
This is also a good time to make sure that your domain is unlocked at GoDaddy. When your domain is locked GoDaddy has a good excuse to not let the transfer to go through. After that I got a mail from Godaddy saying that, my request to transfer my domain was received and still I can cancel the transfer and stay with Godaddy. Who cares? Who wanted to stay with loser? In this case you need to approve the transfer in Godaddy control panel. Or else it’ll take more time to transfer from Godaddy to new domain registrar.
If you do as I said above you could transfer your domain in hours. Otherwise it’ll take around 8 days to complete the process.
To force the transfer
- To do this, log in to your GoDaddy account.
- Click on the Domains tab and select Pending Transfers. You should see your site listed.
- Select the check box next to your site and click the Accept/Decline button a the top toolbar.
- Choose accept and click the OK button.
- Now your transfer will continue without waiting the three days!
As mentioned in NameCheap site, these are the main steps for domain transfer!
- Step 1: User adds the domains that needs to be transferred and completes checkout
- Step 2: If EPP Key (Authorization Key) is required, then an email with EPP request is sent. You can also enter the EPP key by going to My Account > Manager Transfers and clicking on the domain just after completing the order without waiting. (To obtain an EPP key, please contact your current registrar.)
- Step 3: If Step 2 is completed or not required, then the domain is submitted for transfer.
- Step 4: An email containing a link is sent to ‘Administrator Email’ for the domain.
- Step 5: If user click on the link and approves the transfer, the domain name is transferred to Us.
- Step 6: If the domain named is ‘locked’ at the losing registrar, the registrar lock should be removed before proceeding with the transfer. An email is sent if the lock needs to be removed.
- Step 7: When the domain is unlocked, the transfer completes successfully
Now I successfully moved my domain to NameCheap. And I was surprised by their customer care. They take only few hours to reply my questions personally. I’m glad I’m with a superb domain registrar, and hope I can spend rest of my life with NameCheap.
GoDaddy go to hell!
PS: It was written few months back, brought it up again thinking that it’ll help more people.

Godaddy rocks dude, not sure what planet you are from. Every single one of the statements you made above, with the exception of the paypal issue, are simply NOT TRUE. I have dealt with dozens of registrars and hosting companies over the past two years – none of them come close to the ease and speed of Godaddy. Now network solutions, registar, those are two turds to deal with… Godaddy – easy, fast, cheap. Nuff said.

there is an ad for godaddy domains in ur left sidebar 😉
also, u need to start the transfer 60 days before the domain expires. lese, it won allow i guess.

Godaddy is in fact a lot better than many others in automating the services and prompt responses. I think the requirement to have to a credit card attached is to ensure that the owner can be traced back in the case of a misuse. Further, domain transfer from Godaddy is very painless, and they too advice you to make use of the control panel even from the moment you register with Godaddy. Perhaps it would be our fault not to read follow the links and instructions 🙂

@Ravi
Yeah yeah I can see their ads all around my site even some video ads 🙂

I use godaddy service for a few years and never had any problems. I love this service especially because of their offers I’m recieving by email. Sometimes I can buy or renew domains by 30% less than regular price, just using their promo code.
Direct says
Im a little confused… why in the world would you have dislike for godaddy but love for paypal? godaddy has phenominal customer support and great prices… in contrast paypal is about the biggest scam out there. They charge rediculous fees, they try to sucker you into giving them direct access to your accounts by forcing you to “get verified” and they can suspend your account and hold your money from you for any reason they like without explanation or a way for you to fight back.

I too am leaving GoDaddy and heading to NameCheap. Thanks for the information on how to get the EPP key – that helped tremendously.
Why am I leaving? While I have had great service from them, I do not like GoDaddy’s marketing. I am finally doing something about it and taking my business elsewhere.

great thanks for the info, now I can transfer my domain out from Godaddy…
There is thing that I don’t like from it, I was registering bulk domain, so I got free private domain, but when I want to renew it, I can’t remove the private registration, which cost almost 2x normal renewal..
