Dear friends,
Every one is talking and celebrating the victory of Armed forces. As far as I see most of the Tamils are inside house and keeping themselves quite. Also I can see, here and there people are collecting foods and medicines for the IDPs. I can frankly say most of the Tamils are still in the shock to be honest. During this war both SL and LTTE violated the human rights. Thousands of people were killed in this war in vain
Thirty years of damn fucking war has ravaged each and every one of us. Doesn’t matter whether you’re a Tamil or Sinhalese we all fucked up by this war.
From the birth, people of my age have never seen a war free Sri Lanka. Time is having the power to heal but in our case time has given us more vengeance and hatred. No one can deny that Tamils were mistreated in Sri Lanka after the independence.
Tamil Youths started to raise their voice and it became an Eelam war headed by LTTE. Most of us started to believe in this war and thought that we can win our rights back through this war. Now my dear friends, think for a while, who lost everything because of this war? More than our Sinhala brothers, we paid enough in this war.
We always complain about the past. Typical example we always brought up is 1983 riots against the Tamils. True, government should have stopped it, instead they watched it happen and they’ve given enough protection to mobs.
Back in 1983, LTTE killed 19 SL soldiers and it triggered the black July in Sri Lanka, but afterwards when LTTE gained control over Mullaitivu, Elephanpass thousands of soldiers were killed but there was not another riot like 1983. What I’m trying to say is, we Tamils must accept the reality and should give Sri Lanka another chance.
Now the world has change. We must come out of our circle and think according to the current situation, I mean think rationally. Personally I won’t stand another war in this country. I’m tired of it. Please my dear friends give Sri Lanka another chance to prove that Tamils are part of Sri Lanka.
It’s been five years since I moved to Colombo. I studied in Kelaniya campus where most of my friends are Sinhalese. I’ve never been treated badly by any of my friends. When ever I had problems they were there to help me out. They came even to our home in Trincomalee and Jaffna and satayed in our home shared our happiness with us. We went to their homes in places such as A’Pura etc. Now I’m working in a reputed software company where most of my office mates are Sinhalese. Please believe me, when ever I wanted something, there are always friends and most of them are Sinhalese.
I’m assuring that Sinhala youths understand Tamil grievances more than international community such as how we are getting treated in Check-points etc. There are some Sinhala friends who apologized to me on behalf of SL forces after by having seen how I got treated in Check-point.
End of this war brings another era or another chapter to Sri Lanka. We all should take part in this chapter, and no point of talking about the past again and again. We Tamils must give Sri Lanka another chance. Who knows in future world will have lessons from this small nation ‘Sri Lanka’.
PS: Just because I wrote this letter some might call me ‘A Traitor’ but it doesn’t matter. I’m really tired of this damn fucking war and it’s effects. I have come out of the shell, hope everyone will do for the better future of our own people.

one question, “tiered of war” is that because VP has died or did you have the feeling long before that?

Dear Mayu aiya,
I’m feeling very proud about the brave approach of you as a fellow Sri Lankan brother for speaking your heart out. You know what many of my Sinhalese friends are learning tamil now and future won’t be gloomy as many Westerners wanted it to be.
There may be rude comments & accusations thrown at each other once in a while because its very hard to get away from the tom foolery forced upon us for nearly a half a century by idiots & thieves in the both sides of the river.
But believe me, we can make this happen together. It’s so encouraging & strengthening to feel the grip of your hand.
The prosperous Sri Lanka our ancestors dreamt of is not far away if we focus on the right values & principles.
I’m very hopeful about tomorrow.

I don’t think the war will ever happen again.
Yeah, i me too.. I was born in a war thorn country and happy to see it’s over now.
This problems will dillute when the A9,A35 and the yal-devi works again (and other roads too)….quality products from our friends always find good market in colombo as they did before 1978. So I guess people will have to bother more about development, not war.
Thanks for the article. Hope your friends read this.

I have always believed that there can be no military solution to any conflict. Not even political solutions and the signing of agreements can assure peace. Only goodwill and togetherness among common people will assure peace. People to people interaction is a must. Your post highlights this point and I appreciate that.
People from different communities in Sri Lanka should work together for common good that benefits all. Energies should be directed towards constructive activities like rebuilding the economy, infrastructure, protecting the environment, etc.. Generally, people in Sri Lanka should look towards the future rather than uselessly arguing about who was right and who was wrong in the past.
I sincerely wish to see a strong and prosperous Sri Lanka and peaceful South Asia.

Thanks for this write up Mayu.
Both Sinhalese & Tamils have been used for too long by other parties to fulfill there needs. Hope everyone will realize, that everyone were fighting against the wrong enemy.
But right now, you and me have to face the media war against our country and what ever comes after that.

Nice to see your political writings in English.
This can be a good start for a wide range dialog between Sinhalese and Tamil speaking communities on Sri lankan political conflicts and it’s root causes.
We the youth should unite for build a better Srilanka which treat every citizens equally and respectfully. Powers like government, forces and LTTE can never ensure this. This can be done only by the people like us.
Whenever a Tamil person being discriminated in checkpoints, a s Sinhalese should stand for him/her. Whever a Muslim community being oppressed by Tamil powers, Tamils should stand for them. Whenever LTTE place bomb on Buses Tamils should raise their voice against them.
Whenever Political parties scream “this is a Sinhala buddhist country” each and every youth should shout back saying “This is a multi cultural, Multi ethnic Secular Nation”
This is how we can defeat “Divide and rule” concept of Powers.

If we did ask for stop the war before 18, we could’ve been labeled as LTTE supporters who try to safeguard LTTE by stop troops from advancing.
“Stop the war” and “Stop the violence” are the plea of people. Those who live inside the war.
Now war is over for media and political powers. For Tamil people? They will continuously ask for “stop the violence” until they get rid of the “fear” which only a Tamil can realize.

No I didn’t mean that, only I’m saying is that you did ask for war before 18th May and now suddenly you people are saying that “I’m tired of it”. why?
“If we did ask for stop the war before 18, we could’ve been labeled as LTTE supporters who try to safeguard LTTE by stop troops from advancing.”
yes, true, that’s because you asked to stop war, stop violence when LTTE is loosing, not when they are killing innocent sinhalese on the go. Did you ever ever asked LTTE to stop war then. I don’t think so..
M.Mauran says
@කිසංක
//Did you ever ever asked LTTE to stop war//
Yes I did.
I am doing it since 2003. No one believes I did not vote for TNA in 2002/2003.
My political stance is clear.
1. Sri lanka is situated in a most important Geo-political place.
2. Making this country instable is essential for global super powers to use this place for their geo-political interests without any problems.
3. Super powers tried to divide this country by Sinhala regionalism, Religion and Language-based-racism. Language-based-racism helped them a lot.
4. They started to feed racism through Bandaranayaka by Sinhala only act, Sinhala Chauvinistic nationalism and through chelvanayagam by promoting Tamil narrow Nationalism. (Happened in 50s-70s)
5. Western powers invested hoard of money on Mahaweli scheme with deep hidden agenda. Mahaweli scheme helped in various ways to divide this country. It lead to riots and attacks on Tamil community in 55, 64, 72 and 77
6. In 1977 US-Soviet cold war was at it’s peak. J.R.Jayawardhana show his pro stand with US explicitly. Soviet allied regional super power, India, used 77 riots to involve and rule Srilankan politics. India Gave arms and training to Tamil rebel groups. India was clear on it’s agenda of dividing Tamil groups and feed Tamஇl-Muslim hatred.
7. 1983 Government sponsored riot and attack on Tamil community took place. Same time, JR government signed various sensitive agreements with USA.
8. India used 83 Situation to directly involve here with it’s armed forces. India succeeded it’s operation by stopped US intervention in Srilanka.
9. 2000s, Global political polars have chanced radically. India became pro-US, No more Soviet, no more communist china. We are seeing the present Global moves in our politics.
Throughout the history, what we learn is, Global super powers using local powers such as governments, parties, armed groups to deploy their selfish agendas. Again and again the people-no matter which race they are- victimized for it.
We should come out from narrow views on this conflicts like Ellara-Gemunu comparison.
We should broaden our views to understand how global powers using our local powers to deploy their agendas by victimizing us.

I read it late… but I still have some comments; about the post as well as the comments themselves.
Post: Bravo! I don’t care whether you were supporting LTTE before or not… Honestly; it doesn’t even matter if you were fighting against SLA before. it really doesn’t matter. Every one has a right to change and when ever that change is for the common good; good people should welcome that.
Siddhartha Gauthama was practicing extreme self torture for six years; then he gave it up because he realized it serves no purpose. He went on to become the Buddha. Angulimala the serial killer of buddha’s era, went on to become one of the greatest arahats.
About comments… I see some posting hate-comments… Lost-soul extremists… They are the kind who created this conflict; they are the kind from which prabhakaran emereged. They are the real traitors of this nation.
