Download free Tamil Dictionary – PALS Tamil e-DICTIONARY

Free Tamil Dictionaries are part of any linguistic community. Tamil English Tamil dictionary is one such gem for Tamil linguistics. There are not many Free Tamil Dictionaries available online or their quality is not that great.

That’s why I decided to share Free Tamil Dictionary Pals Tamil e-Dictionary which was released by Palaniyappa brothers. You can use this dictionary as Tamil – Tamil – English Dictionary.

Also please not that you can type using Tamil 99 layout in this free Tamil dictionary but they are not using Unicode encoding so you can’t copy paste the text directly from Dictionary.

If you have font issue try the steps below (via vengakateshan)

I found the solution for windows7 OS after long try… here I’am sharing this to you all.
here it is…
1. install setup file as usual.
2. install msvbvm50.exe(visual basic virtual machine)
3. grand all user rights to this file(c:windowssystem32win2sys.dll)
right click that file amd click properties, go to security tab, grand full control to user.Here you can download “msvbvm50.exe” –
download.microsoft.com/download/vb50pro/utility/1/win98/EN-US/Msvbvm50.exe

  147. satheesh, I have Windows 7 64-bit and fixed the problem by right clicking the Tamil e-Dictionary.exe file and then clicking “Disable visual themes” check box. Now the program works normally.

    To everyone else. Today I noticed the http://www.ildc.in website is down. Yesterday it was working but I didn’t have time to complete the download for Pals-Tamil-e-Dictionary.zip

    Does anyone have a mirror for the most current version of this application or a status on the ILDC website?

    I suggest adding the following features to Pals Dictionary:
    * Dictionary Browse in Tamil by Consonants & Vowels
    * Tamil – Tamil – English
    * Tamil Unicode Font with support for copy and paste of text between applications
    * Tamil ’99 Visual Keyboard
    * Romanized Visual Keyboard Layout option for typing with Pals Dictionary
    * Phonetic transcription chart for all 247 Tamil Letters corresponding to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA Standards)
    * Click Word to Pronounce (Audio) with ability to import own audio pronunciations
    * Root Word Search
    * Extended Help File in English & Tamil
    * Portable Version (runs directly off USB Flash Drive – no need to install on Windows first)

    Some of these features were included in the earlier version of Pal Dictionary 1.0.0.1
    Why did they remove these great features from the new version?

    Detail steps:In windows 7 Start–>type ‘pals’ in Search progarms and fils box- select- Pals e-Dictionary Search– right click–> Troublshoot compatibility–> Try recommended setting –>Windows XP (SP2) – Start the program –> Yes,save these settings.

  351. FAIL TO INSTALL FONT error

    Go to Program files -> Palaniappa Brothers->
    Pals Tamil e-Dictionary->Tamil font copy those fonts and paste to fonts folder in control panel.. after done this u would get the same response (fail to install font) when u open the dictionary .. But it would work well with tamil fonts..

    i found the solution for windows7OS after long try… here am sharing this to you all.
    here it is…

    1. install setup file as usual.
    2. install msvbvm50.exe(visual basic virtual machine)
    3. grand all user rights to this file(c:windowssystem32win2sys.dll)
    right click that file amd click properties, go to security tab, grand full control to user.

    Here you can download “msvbvm50.exe” –
    download.microsoft.com/download/vb50pro/utility/1/win98/EN-US/Msvbvm50.exe
