Sri Lanka Telecom recently introduced IPTV in Sri Lanka. IPTV is simply a TV broadcast over the copper telephone line. To have this IPTV in your home you must have ADSL.
I was watching a demo of IPTV and it was very interesting. Especially the VOD (Video on Demand) is an very interesting feature. Say you have a favorite show at 7 PM but when you come home it almost 8 PM and you missed your favorite show. If you have an IPTV in your home you don’t have to worry. You can simply browse and see your favorite show at your convenient time. Also note you can forward and rewind your favorite shows. Damn cool isn’t it?
Initial set-up cost for IPTV is around 1000 Rs and you can start with 1000 Rs rental. You’ll be given 14 international channels and 5 Sri Lankan channels.
I’m just wondering who will take this connection. Currently you can get around 50 channels from a cable operator for just 400 Rs. Also the set-up cost for the cable TV is very cheap. Another drawback for IPTV is you need to have broad band in your house to get IPTV. I don’t think existing cable customers will not switch to IPTV easily, as their connection is very cost effective.
In the other hand Dialog TV is also offered to the customers and still they have not reached the breakeven point. Seems STL gonna have some tough time with IPTV. I know IPTV is a revolution and very cool but cost matters a lot to Sri Lankans.

Cost does matter to Srilankans, but if IPTV can have the quality in terms of availability which i don’t see in the the Cable operator and DTV while raining cat’s and dogs then SLT can most probably get some potential customers in.
Again the drawback is when comparing the Channels which the Cable operator and DTV have a greater advantage of.
