Though there are many people coming to the virtual world, most of the virtual citizens are not aware of RSS. It’s a powerful tool that offered over the web all these days. Let me give you some basic knowledge on this wonderful technology.
RSS is also known as Rich Site Summery or Real Simple Syndication. So what we can do with RSS??
Are you a person checking news portals or sports site regularly for updates? What if you can get a site where all the updates are given in one place? Sounds interesting..Huh?
This is what exactly RSS offering you. You can observe that most of the leading web sites and blogs are offering RSS feed to their users. What you need to do is subscribe to that RSS feed in a RSS Reader such as Google reader. Later if you want to check for the latest update on the site, you don’t have to go to the site every time. You can simply check your Google Reader. You can find all the updates in Google Reader. You can add any number of feeds to your Google Reader and check all the updates in your Google Reader.
There are many RSS readers available in the net, even Firefox got a built in RSS Reader and you can find free desk top RSS readers in web.
It doesn’t matter what is the reader you are using, you may follow the following steps
- Get your fav RSS feed
- Give your RSS feed to a RSS Reader (e.g. Google Reader)
- Time to time check your RSS Reader for updates
Those who have more technical knowledge can understand that RSS is based on XML technology. Special tags are used for documenting updates that are done to a particular web site. The documented fields include the title, the summary, the date, and a hyperlink to the item. RSS file is updated every time a web site is updated.
Services such as PODCASTING are based on this RSS technology. You may wonder how come my iTunes downloads audio files from a site. It’s no wonder, iTunes reads the RSS feeds and if there are any updates, then it’ll download the latest audio file. Pretty simple huh?
It’s so sad that still many of us are not utilizing the power of RSS. Get your wheels on track and start to use RSS. It’ll save your time and money.
