You Got a Question
When we have questions, we usually go ask from friends, online forums, Yahoo answers. But what about asking your question on IM (Yahoo / Gtalk) and some person who knows the answer replies you via IM again. The person who replied you may be or may be not a friend of yours.
Vark.com (Branded as Aardvark) is network of IM friends who is willing to help others. I’ll give you a typical example.
How Aardvark works
You’ve a question about movie tickets in Colombo, so you tell your question to Aardvark.
- You: How to find movie tickets in Colombo?
- Now Aardvark will look for someone who knows about Colombo
- Once Aardvark found someone who knows about Colombo, It’ll pass the question to the user.
- User answers: http://www.ticketslk.com/
- Aardvark will now show you the answer http://www.ticketslk.com/
Pretty cool huh?
Pros and Cons
I usually try questions regarding books, especially about comics. I’ll get good number of responses. Usually you’ll get good number of responses for IT, Tech related stuffs but you’ll get less number of responses for localized questions.
For an example if you ask a question about English or Google you’ll get good number answers but if you ask a question about Tamil or Sinhala then you’ll hardly get a question.
If you take Yahoo Answers, it’s one of the biggest communities available online. Compare to Yahoo Answers, Aardvark community is small.
But it’s very easy and convenient to ask a question in Gtalk / MSN window and getting the answer instantly. Believe me, Yahoo or Google can’t answer all your questions but Aardvark can answer most of the questions.
Whenever you ask questions, they were archived with the answers. So later you can go to their history page and refer the questions and answers. Also you can re-submit a question to the Aardvark community if you’re not happy with the answer.
Spirit of the Community
If you’re in a community you make use of it while helping it. What I mean is you can help the Aardvark community by answering others questions. In your profile page you can add tags. These tags will be used to identify your field of expertise.
If you tag “Google” then when someone got a question about Google, it’ll be shown to you. I have been using Aardvark network for about six months but they’ve never started to spam me. So don’t worry they won’t start to spam your IM client 🙂
Invitation (100 only)
They’re still running on Beta and allowing limited amount of users inside. If you wanna check it out now itself, you may try the invitation link.
Once you join the network you’ll also be given invitation links, so you can also invite your friends to the world of Aardvark.
